End of tenancy cleaning checklist (UK)

23 March 2026

Room-by-room checklist for tenants and movers: kitchen, bathrooms, living spaces, and what to confirm before you book.

End-of-tenancy cleaning is about handing the property back in the condition your agreement expects. Inventory clerks look at detail: edges, inside appliances, and fixtures — not just “looks tidy”.

Before the cleaner arrives

  • Remove all personal belongings and rubbish.
  • Defrost the freezer if required by the tenancy agreement.
  • Note any existing damage so you do not confuse it with cleaning issues.

Kitchen

  • Clean inside and outside of cupboards (empty first); degrease hob, extractor, and splashbacks.
  • Oven (including racks and door), fridge/freezer inside and out.
  • Sink, taps, and waste; floor swept and mopped.

Bathrooms

  • Descale taps, shower screen, tiles, and grout lines.
  • Toilet inside, outside, and behind; polish mirrors and chrome.
  • Cabinets inside and out; floors and skirting.

Living areas and bedrooms

  • Dust all surfaces including skirting, door frames, and radiators.
  • Clean inside windows and sills where accessible.
  • Vacuum carpets; mop hard floors.
